What led to the war? WTF happened?

Austria-Hungary was a polyglot empire of different
ethnic groups at odds with each other over religion and
politics, and united to a flag that wasn't theirs.
The only thing the divergent ethnic people hated more
than each other was Hapsburgs. Archduke Franz Ferdinand's
public persona was cold, sharped-tongued and short-tempered.
In the summer of 1914, Franz Ferdinand and wife Sophie accepted
an invitation to visit the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo. He had
been informed of terrorist activity conducted by the nationalist
organization the "Black Hand," but ignored the warnings.
Nationalist Gavrilo Princip was waiting. As the car backed up,
Princip approached and fired his gun, striking his wife, Sophie,
in the abdomen and the archduke in the neck. Both died before
reaching the hospital. After demanding impossible reparations and
failing to receive them, Austria-Hungary declared war against
Serbia. As was expected, the complex web of alliances was activated.
Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, Germany declared war on
Russia, and France and Britain declared war on Germany and
Austria-Hungary. World War I had begun.

Now, up until just before the U.S. declared war on April 6th,
1917, the U.S. had desperately tried to stay neutral, but ties
to Britain, propaganda, the sinking of ships by German U-boats,
and a German attempt in the Zimmermann Note to get Mexico to
declare war on the U.S. pushed the U.S. to getting involved.

Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States vs.
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.

What were the main battles that involved USA?
  • Battle of Cantignym - May 28, 1918
  • Chateau-Thierry - June 3, 1918
  • Battle of Belleau Wood - June 6, 1918
  • Battle of St. Mihiel - September 12, 1918
  • Vittorio Veneto, 24 October – 4 November 1918
Mostly in France, but later the 332d Regiment with
attached hospital troops was sent from the A.E.F. to
the Italian Front in July 1918 for the morale effect
which it was hoped that the sight of Americans would
have on the Italians. This force of about 1,200 men
took part in the last great Italian offensive against
the Austrians, the Battle of Vittorio Veneto.

Germany had formally surrendered on November 11, 1918,
and all nations had agreed to stop fighting while
the terms of peace were negotiated. On June 28, 1919,
Germany and the Allied Nations (including Britain,
France, Italy and Russia) signed the Treaty of Versailles,
formally ending the war.
